Urban Refugees’ Impact on the Urban Fabric Form of the City Structure: The Case Study of Urban Syrian Refugees in the Sixth of October City

Due to war and conflicts, the world recently suffered from the highest levels of displacement. Therefore the problem of refugees and immigrants all over the world is one of the most complex issues discussed in international forums with no radical solutions. Sadly, the Arab world has had the highest percentage of refugees seeking asylum, particularly in Egypt. The Syrian war is the most serious humanitarian conflict in the world causing an increasing number of refugees over time. Because Egypt has no camping policy, all refugees who live in Egypt are independent in financial and social aspects. Egypt is the only nation that does not set up refugee camps on its territory. Many statements were made by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, to confirm that Egypt hosts more than 5 million refugees on its lands. The primary purpose of this article is to focus on urban immigration and highlight concerns about immigrants and city identities to better understand the connection between the city and immigrants by looking at how their daily habits influence their appreciation for the city’s open spaces. This study emphasizes the relevance of knowing immigrants’ urban open space preferences based on push and pulls factors by questionnaires and analyzing the results. Given this background, this study explores the condition of Syrian refugees in Cairo by applying a case study on the Sixth of October City and analyzing Syrian refugee spaces there and then providing recommendations and potential future possibilities. The study used a mixed-methods approach that included a survey, group discussions with selected survey respondents who were Syrian and Egyptian, and interviews with Syrian refugees who had lived in the city for more than ten years.
