Percutaneous Sampling Procedures

Percutaneous sampling procedures are increasingly used for the assessment of musculoskeletal infections. They allow microbiological and histopathological diagnoses when a microbiological diagnosis is not made by blood cultures or serological tests. Percutaneous sampling procedures are safe, cost- and time-saving, less painful, and less invasive than open surgical methods. Several procedures and imaging-guidance methods are available, such as fluoroscopy, computed tomography, ultrasonography, and magnetic resonance imaging. To achieve successful outcomes and prevent complications, it is crucial to have a thorough understanding of musculoskeletal anatomy, precise technique, and effective collaboration between the interventional radiologist, pathologist, microbiologist, and physician.
