Introduction

The first chapter of this book provides the basic introduction of misinformation. It starts with the historical background of misinformation and subsequently explores its definitions, various types, different forms, and modalities. It also briefly discusses various clues present in misinformation, the purpose and reason for creating misinformation, some clues present in false content, and the broad impact of misinformation on individuals and society. The latter part of this chapter broadly talks about the objective of misinformation detection and various challenges that may be encountered during misinformation detection.
