The International Institute of Humanitarian Law and Cultural Property Protection in Armed Conflict

The piece explores the historical path and rationale that led the international community to the negotiation and then adoption, in 1954, of the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, focusing on some very specific peculiarities of this legal instrument, as well as on its original role within the wider IHL body of law. With a special emphasis on the provisions relating to the dissemination of the legal principles outlined by the Convention, the analysis thus presents the key elements of the research and training mission carried out, in more than half a century of activity, by the International Institute of Humanitarian Law in Sanremo (Italy) and abroad.
