Golem: Living Consciousness Without the Brain

The argument is presented that a special form of living consciousness is the living consciousness of a society. Despite a society doesn’t have brain of its own, it can nevertheless be represented as some kind of ‘subject’, which in this chapter is referred to as ‘golem’. It is argued that the most important difference that distinguishes the living consciousness of a golem from that of an individual is that golem’s living consciousness is immune to the imperatives of individual morality. Ways for the individual to cope with this distinction and challenges of his or her society are suggested.
