Reston virus (RESTV), a member of Ebolavirus, was first isolated from cynomolgus monkeys during the quarantine period at a primate facility in Reston and was subsequently transported from the Philippines to the United States. The RESTV-infected monkeys presented anorexia, splenomegaly, and petechial facial hemorrhages, and some infected monkeys died. Pigs are naturally susceptible to RESTV. Currently, RESTV outbreaks are sporadic in pig farms in the Philippines, posing a potential threat to the pig industry. However, the primary reservoirs for RESTV are still unidentified. RESTV is considered a zoonotic pathogen, and although RESTV is not known to cause disease in humans, infection with RESTV in pigs is still a concern for the safety of the food chain. In this chapter, we introduce RESTV through aspects such as epidemiology, phylogenetics, pathology, and pathogenesis.
