Porcine Nodavirus

The history of nodavirus in pigs dates to the mid-twentieth century, when early serological evidence suggested that Nodamura virus (NoV) could infect pigs. A significant milestone came in November 2017 with the identification of a novel porcine nodavirus in the United States. This discovery, achieved through next-generation sequencing (NGS) of brain tissues from pigs exhibiting neurological symptoms, represented a significant advancement in understanding this virus. Genomic analysis revealed that the RNA1 segment of porcine nodavirus shares its highest nucleotide identity (51.1%) with flock house virus, while its RNA2 segment shares 48% nucleotide identity with the RNA2 segment of canine nodavirus. Genetic studies of nucleotide and amino acid sequences from both genome segments confirmed porcine nodavirus as a new species within the genus of Alphanodavirus. Further investigations are essential to understand the epidemiology, pathogenicity, clinical impact, and immune response associated with this virus.
