Akabane Disease: A Veterinary Perspective on a Teratogenic Pathogen

Akabane is an infectious viral teratogenic disease transmitted by blood-sucking insects, including mosquitoes and Culicoides species, caused by akabane virus (AKAV), which belongs to the genus Orthobunyavirus of the family Bunyaviridae. AKAV is an enveloped virus with three segments of a single-stranded negative-sense RNA genome. AKAV infection has been associated with different forms of congenital anomalies (arthrogryposis-hyranencephaly syndrome), fetal death, and abortion in pregnant cattle, sheep, and goats. AKAV is found in several tropical and subtropical areas, including parts of Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Australia. Because of global warming, there is a risk for introducing the disease into currently uninfected regions with the spread of infected insect populations into new zones. There is no effective treatment for affected calves, but neutralizing antibodies persist for life in dams after infection. For disease prevention, inactivated AKAV is commercially available to minimize disease occurrence. This chapter provides a comprehensive review of AKAV, covering its history, etiology, epidemiology, clinical signs, pathology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, immunity, prevention, and zoonotic potential.
