Pseudorabies Virus Infection in Different Domestic and Wild Mammals
摘要
Pseudorabies virus (PRV), the causative pathogen of Aujeszky’s disease, has been recognized for more than a century since it was first documented in 1902. As a member of the alphaherpesvirus subfamily within the herpesviruses family, PRV has caused significant economic damage to the global swine industry. Swine serve as the sole reservoir for this virus, with the clinical signs varying in different animal species and stage of growth. The research of PRV extends beyond swine, as it can infect a wide range of domestic and wild mammals. In particular, there have been several reports of human infection cases, highlighting the zoonotic potential of PRV. Extensive researches have led to the successful eradication of PRV in numerous countries. However, PRV remains a significant pathogen that affects swine health and poses a risk to various animal species. The purpose of this chapter is to briefly summarize the current understanding of the etiology, epidemiology, phylogenetics, clinical manifestations, pathology, pathogenesis, diagnostic methods, immune response, preventive measures, control strategies, and zoonotic potentials of PRV.
