Marginalization Stress: Hate, Violence, and Microaggressions
摘要
This chapter explores the profound impact of marginalization stress on individuals’ overall well-being by exploring the effects of racial trauma, examining both past and recent racial events, on psychological processes, behavioral health, and physical health. This chapter will explore how various forms of violence and hate, including microaggressions, racism, violence, homophobia, xenophobia, and transphobia, can cause immense harm to individuals who experience them. Drawing on research, current events, codes of ethics within helping professions, and regulations and laws, this chapter will provide an analysis of the effects of marginalization stress. Moreover, this chapter will discuss a case study regarding when counselors are faced with complex scenarios, and highlight the use of a trauma-informed ethical decision-making model. These strategies will aim to support counselors in being culturally aware and engaged while helping clients cope with the various forms of violence and hate they have experienced.
