Improving Support Systems: Suggestions from University Students and Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Faculty Members

The interviews highlighted differences in higher education financial support systems, disability policies, and lack of deaf awareness for the provision of accommodations among countries as well as other disparities. Therefore, this chapter discusses suggestions from university students and deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) faculty members on how to improve support systems in higher education. They emphasized the importance of financial support, training of academic sign language interpreters, and financial resources for International Sign interpreters and recommended that governments and university administrators be aware of the importance of developing faculty disability services, increasing the number of DHH faculty members, and enhancing the quality of the interpreting services provided.
