University Student Perspectives Regarding Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Faculty Classes

This chapter discusses the interviewed students’ experiences and their perceptions of the benefits of taking courses facilitated by deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) members at mainstream universities in Japan, the United States, Canada, Sweden, and Ghana. The student participants shared their experiences regarding accommodations for DHH faculty members, accommodations for hearing students, the communication barriers they encountered and/or witnessed, and whether the classes benefited their career development and degrees. The interviews highlighted the impact of the availability of accommodations on the outcomes of student–faculty communication in teaching and learning activities.
