Representative Range Voting: How to Elect the First President of Scotland

This paper presents a novel single-winner voting system. After a brief review of existing systems, a variation of range voting is described, in which the winner is the candidate minimizing the total square dislike expressed by the voters. I argue that this method chooses the candidate who is, in a sense made precise, the most representative of the views of the electorate.
