Extending the Literary Repertoire

This chapter aims to extend literary repertoires which can be orchestrated as appropriate to a particular audience, occasion or context. An extensive bank of literary knowledge, based on an almost bottomless account of literary material, is an extremely useful resource which can be drawn on to provide stimulating, thought-provoking and enjoyable language-learning texts almost endlessly. The chapter is organized according to 12 genres: folk, young children’s, older children’s and teen literature, short stories, non-fiction, poetry, drama, novellas, novels, science fiction and fantasy. Each of these sections is provided with story summaries as well as background information and ideas for discussion. Overall, the aim is to provide learners with enjoyable and stimulating material which will help to consolidate in their minds the language in which it is couched.
