Wearable Health Monitoring System for Sweat Analysis

Noninvasive diagnosis and continuous health monitoring are fast and convenient alternatives to blood-based diagnosis. This is made possible by the presence of biomarkers in bodily fluids that are released from the human body externally, such as sweat, saliva, and tears. Out of this sweat is the most easily accessible biofluid for continuous health monitoring. Recent developments in sweat analysis systems show that many researchers presently proposed wearable, miniaturized, integrated, and multiplexed sensor systems. The major challenge is to accurately analyze analytes by improving calibration in real-time analysis and simultaneous monitoring of multiple analytes. Current advances in wearable electronics have overcome many limitations of sweat sensing. Now, these sensors can offer a non-invasive way to gain molecular understanding of the dynamics of our bodies. Here we present a wearable health monitoring system based on sweat analysis using ion-selective electrodes of sodium and chloride. The proposed system measures the concentrations of sodium, chloride, and glucose in human sweat. This can be used as an indication of the dehydrated state of the human body. For diabetic patients, a glucose sensor’s noninvasive monitoring of glucose levels is very beneficial. The proposed system is compact so can be used as a wearable device that is capable of continuously monitoring and wirelessly transmitting sensor data to the personal computer or smartphone.
