Translation and Own-Language Use in Language Teaching: The Origins of the Monolingual Conquest
摘要
This chapter will comprehensively survey the changing status of translation and own-language(s) use in the language classroom. It will cover the most important approaches and milestones in language teaching development. Reflecting the social and academic trends in the selected context, it will depict the current atmosphere related to own language and, partially, translation use in the language classroom. The present chapter will discuss the particular methods and approaches through a translation-oriented lens to follow the shifts in the conception and the status of translation. Describing the development of various language teaching and learning theories, the chapter will reveal the roots of the monolingual assumption still dominant in the foreign language classroom.
