Conclusion

This chapter sums up all the distinct, but interrelated themes in the eight chapters by outlining the major findings of this book. Each of the chapters makes a significant contribution to the overarching aim of the book. This last chapter provides a summary of the entire book that the camp was invented in the colonies. Examining this topological elasticity is important as it provides both the foundation and the long view essential to understanding the paradigm shift in the way states continue to engage with refugees and asylum seekers. As prolonged encampment has become a widely acceptable norm in society, here I draw the conclusion that the camp which was pioneered in the colonies should be abolished. My abolitionist approach not only aims at ending the camp’s carceral infrastructures, but also decolonising the endemic racialised logic embedded within it. More importantly, my Afrocentric critique from the Global South provides a new direction on the current debates on the politics of asylum in Africa.
