Understanding the Online Learning Environment

This chapter begins with a brief introduction to the historical events that have defined and shaped online education in higher education. Information is provided that explains the different types of instructional activities and strategies that occur in an online classroom \i and how these differentiate online learning \i from learning that occurs in a traditional face-to-face classroom. An explanation of the various components of an online course syllabus \i is included to illustrate these differences and emphasize the unique aspects of an online learning environment. While the roles and responsibilities of a student and an instructor in an online learning environment are similar to those in a face-to-face environment, fundamental differences are highlighted in this chapter. Student understanding of these key differences will be a critical step towards overall readiness and preparedness for the online learning environment. One of these differences is centered around technical and digital literacy skills of online students, with an emphasis on the importance and reliance on technology to engage in online learning. Thus, this chapter aims to help students understand the importance of a course syllabus, differentiate between common types of instructional activities and assessments found in an online course, and address any gaps in technical and digital literacy skills.
