Due to the specificity of geography and climate, the fragility of early architectural heritage in Hunan mainly manifests in the unsatisfying durability of two significant materials: timber and masonry. There are traditional and modern means for preserving wood, but neither of them could perform ideally because of Hunan's geographic and climatic characteristics. These facts define the fragility of early architectural heritage in Hunan in terms of substance, which has been a connotative premise for widespread academic arguments. Hence, more dimensions of fragility could be explored.
