Memory | Human | Space. A Paradigm Introducing Design Thinking in Architectural Adaptive Reuse Design

The evolving landscape of architectural preservation has witnessed the emergence of the Adaptive Reuse Design (ARD) paradigm, which seeks to reconcile preservation needs with contemporary design strategies. This paper introduces the “Memory | Human | Space” (MHS) Paradigm, a holistic approach that integrates Design Thinking and User-Centered methodologies into the ARD workflow. The framework capitalises on the synergies between preservation and reuse by incorporating tools such as Digital Replicas, fostering a nuanced appreciation of historical significance, cultural values, functional requirements, and sustainability. Experiments with the paradigm in various courses revealed transformative experiences for students, fostering a human-centric approach that celebrates the past while envisioning a future-oriented relevance. The results of the experiences were first applied in Hunan Province in Adaptive Reuse Design workshops aimed toward the protection and development of Hunan’s Architectural Heritage. The paper underscores the potential of the MHS Paradigm, offering insights and recommendations for its integration while also emphasising the value of evolving digital tools in the design process.
