Promoting Prosocial Behavior in School Setting
摘要
Prosocial or positive social behaviors within the school setting have attracted the attention of researchers, mental health professionals, and educators due to their considerable benefits at both the individual and societal levels, as well as their preventive role against antisocial behaviors. This chapter aims to provide a contemporary and comprehensive elucidation of the phenomenon of prosocial behavior, with a specific focus on school-based intervention programs for promoting prosocial behaviors. Therefore, the definition of prosocial behavior is initially provided, followed by its typologies such as helping, altruism, and moral courage and explicate their relationships. Subsequently, relevant theories and approaches are presented to comprehend the underlying reasons, motivations, and contextual factors that drive individuals to exhibit these behaviors, thereby facilitating a deeper understanding of the nature of this concept. Then, examples of prosocial behavior intervention programs for different age groups in school settings are presented. Overall, the current chapter is thought to raise awareness, guide, and encourage researchers and practitioners about the crucial role of using positive school psychology interventions for fostering prosocial behavior and preventing antisocial ones. By nurturing a positive and supportive school climate that fosters the development of these skills, scholars can promote a culture of prosocial behavior and encourage students to engage in acts of kindness and benevolence toward others. Additionally, it is suggested that future research should focus on evaluating the effectiveness of these interventions and exploring new avenues for promoting prosocial behavior in schools.
