Mindfulness and Its Role in Youth Mental Health in Schools

  • Silvia Majercakova Albertova

摘要

Mindfulness involves maintaining awareness of present-moment experiences in an accepting and non-judgmental way. Rooted in Buddhist traditions, secular mindfulness practice has drawn increasing research interest in recent decades due to positive mental health outcomes. It has paved its way into education through mindfulness-based interventions that enhance student mental, behavioral, and academic outcomes. The present chapter aims to present the contextual background of mindfulness and its application in the educational setting. Along with the conceptualization of mindfulness and its components relevant to the educational process, such as attention, different facets of mindfulness are discussed, research on the effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions in youth is reviewed, and available mindfulness assessment measures are introduced. Practical considerations of mindfulness application in the school context include discussion on suggestions for the successful implementation of mindfulness practices and programs in schools. An overview of mindfulness-based programs and some commonly used mindfulness-based practices that were developmentally adapted for children and youth is presented. Current trends, challenges, and future directions in research and application of mindfulness in positive education are discussed with the overarching aim of enhancing mental health in schools. Given the presented review, cultivating mindfulness in schools has the potential to promote positive mental health outcomes in children and youth.
