Cultivating Resilience and Resilient Mindset in Schools: Practices and Strategies for Youth

  • Gökmen Arslan

摘要

Resilience, the ability to bounce back from challenges, is a fundamental component of well-being. In this chapter, we aim to provide a theoretical and empirical framework for school-based positive psychology interventions to promote resilience and well-being in young people. This chapter is not only about presenting resilience as a mechanism for overcoming adversity but also about highlighting it as a way to thrive in the midst of challenges. Although there are several practices and strategies aimed at promoting resilience in children and youth, the sustained effectiveness of these efforts remains a daunting challenge. This chapter argues for the implementation of comprehensive, school-wide resilience programs that provide young people with not only the skills but also the mindset needed to overcome challenges. These efforts go beyond traditional approaches and aim to cultivate what we call “resilient mindset,” characterized by flexibility and proactive confrontation of obstacles. There is also a need for culturally sensitive prevention and assessment tools that go beyond Western perspectives to ensure the relevance and validity of resilience in different contexts. Evidence shows that fostering resilience and building resilient mindset in children and youth are paramount as fundamental elements of growth and community. By advancing research and implementing comprehensive resilience-building policies and practices, we empower young people not only to withstand challenges but also to thrive and find meaning in their lives.
