Sexual Abuse in Individuals with Intellectual Disability
摘要
Sexual abuse is more common in individuals with intellectual disability than in the general population. There are multiple risk factors that increase their risk including risk factors associated with the individual, the individual’s perception of abuse, and their ability to report the abuse. Various psychological, physiological, and behavioral outcomes arise from sexual abuse in individuals with intellectual disability. Some are similar to the general public, while others are seen more frequently in individuals with disabilities. These characteristics can help identify individuals at risk. Improved screening and intervention are also needed in medical providers’ offices. Once an individual is identified as a sexual assault victim, community and medical collaboration needs to occur to allow the individual appropriate care. To help prevent sexual abuse, improved education in various settings including the medical provider's office, schools, and caregiver’s home is necessary.
