Inpatient Care of Adults with Conditions of Childhood

Increasing numbers of patients with once-fatal or life-limiting pediatric illnesses are surviving into adulthood, resulting in unique issues and challenges for patients, families, and providers. Many of these patients are having increasing contact with the healthcare system, particularly in the inpatient setting, necessitating the development of unique models of care to help provide safe, effective, and holistic care. Developing such a system for this high-risk patient population requires thoughtful planning, stakeholder engagement, and constant improvement to ensure if required care can be delivered. This chapter explores how to consider building such a service in the inpatient setting to accommodate this unique patient population, with the ultimate goal of ensuring that patients receive the right care at the right place for the right condition.
