Preoperative Clearance

Adults with chronic childhood conditions have special considerations for the perioperative period. The provider performing a preoperative consultation should be aware of both general considerations and recommendations specific to the underlying condition or the organ system affected. In addition to the general preoperative risk assessment, the provider must pay particular attention to childhood experiences and records, long-term sequelae of childhood conditions, and issues for which the adult healthcare system may not be prepared. Recommendations for preoperative optimization and postoperative management will be particularly helpful to the managing team. Additional specialty consultation is frequently indicated both pre- and postoperatively.
