摘要

Wheelchair seating and positioning is an important consideration when addressing the needs of the adult with a childhood condition whose mobility needs required use of a wheelchair. Proper positioning is essential for participation in daily activities, maximizing independence through mobility and optimizing physiological function. A poorly fitted seating system can lead to secondary complications such as impairment in skin integrity, deformity, and pain. An optimally configured mobility device is essential to improve levels of functional independence. This chapter will highlight the importance of a proper mobility assessment and the consequences of long-term use of a mobility device while also reviewing options for mobility devices and discussing considerations for specific populations. It is not meant to be all-inclusive but rather to serve as a guide for adult healthcare providers caring for this growing population of patients. As this population’s needs are specific, adults with childhood conditions who require a new mobility device or an evaluation of a current device should be referred to a licensed clinical specialist, such as an occupational therapist or physical therapist, for a thorough seating assessment.
