Examining Proverbs 6:6–11 and Selected Shona Proverbs from African Biblical Hermeneutics

This chapter examined Proverbs 6:6–11 and selected Shona proverbs from an African Biblical hermeneutical perspective. The realisation that triggered this study is that a lot of scholarship has researched the meaningful contribution of the Bible, but little attention has been given to investigating the contribution of the Bible and indigenous knowledge systems (IKS). This study served to fill the scholarship gap by interrogating Biblical proverbs and selected Shona proverbs from a typically Afro-centric angle. It is mirrored in African Biblical Hermeneutics, which permeates the application of the Bible to African traditions so as to transform Africa from poverty, injustice and underdevelopment. The study stems from the observation that Biblical proverbs and Shona proverbs have been underutilised in an effort to alleviate various crises in Africa. This study observed that examining Proverbs 6:6–11 and selected Shona proverbs from an African Biblical hermeneutical angle enables one to realise the fundamental role of the Bible and indigenous knowledge systems as knowledge reservoirs for the political, social, religious and economic transformation of African societies. The study, therefore, recommends more projects in the juxtaposing of the Bible and indigenous knowledge systems in Zimbabwe for political, social, economic and religious transformation in the country.
