Small Ketogenic Rescues the Brain

摘要

As Mary T. Newport reported in the book, “Alzheimer’s Disease: What If There Was a Cure?” that cognitive functions of dementia will significantly recover by increasing ketone bodies to a small extent. Her husband had early-onset dementia [Newport (Alzheimer’s disease: what if there was a cure?: The story of ketones. Basic Health Publications, 2011)]. She had searched patient information by herself and found that ketone bodies were a little increased and that even these levels of ketone bodies were effective against the progression of dementia. Then, she added coconut oil 30 g/day to his meals. Just after her husband began to have this, she found that his cognitive functions were greatly recovered. It has been a wonderful gift to scientists that she had measured the concentration of ketone bodies of her husband although back then it was not easy to measure ketone bodies in the blood. She reported that the concentrations of ketone bodies were increased from 0.1 mM to 0.2–0.5 mM. Surprisingly, these levels of ketone bodies can be easily possible in our daily lives. Stringent carbohydrate restriction is not necessary at all. Every day you may often feel “I’m a little bit hungry” when you are concentrating on your work. In these cases, the concentrations of ketone bodies are within these ranges (0.2–0.5 mM) [Newport (Alzheimer’s disease: what if there was a cure?: The story of ketones. Basic Health Publications, 2011)].
