Academic Integrity Through Ethical Teaching and Assessment: Overview and Current Trends

“Teaching is an ethical undertaking,” and those who identify as ethical educators believe and act in the best interest of their students; and it stands to reason that the activities of ethical teaching must include those that promote academic integrity and support deep learning. This section of the Handbook of Academic Integrity, 2nd Edition, aims to describe how academic integrity can be promoted through ethical teaching and assessment. The authors outlined various approaches (e.g., authentic assessment, experiential learning, program-level course design, and accommodation) and practices (e.g., duplicate and salami publication) that demonstrate ethical professional practices within higher education. This overview chapter links the authors’ chapters to the existing literature describing ethical care and principles of ethical teaching and assessment. An identification of the gaps in the literature about ethical teaching and assessment in higher education, directions for future research, and considerations for changes in approaches to fostering cultures of integrity close the chapter.
