Encountering and Countering Academic Misconduct in Student Mathematical Work

Academic integrity considerations have only recently begun to be discussed in the mathematics education literature. The types of academic misconduct that appear in some student mathematical work, which is symbol-dense and should be logical, can be different from those found in prose text. This chapter, written with both non-experts and experts in mind, describes the signs of copying, collusion, misuse of technology, and contract cheating in such work. Strategies to disrupt and identify misconduct through assessment design at the task and item level are outlined in some detail. While the pandemic undoubtedly focused mathematics educators’ attention on this previously understudied topic, there is potential for lasting beneficial change.
