Shifting Memory Narratives: The Macro-Meso Link

In this chapter, I conduct an analysis of mnemonic meanings and moral discoursesdiscourses in the EUEU’s memory policymemory policy on the so-called macromacro-mesomeso link, between cultureculture and institutionsinstitutions. I interpret the underlying policy documents of every single year of the ‘European Remembrance’ strand of the Europe for Citizens ProgrammeEurope for Citizens Programme 2014–2020. In those documents I have identified four cultural memorycultural memory narratives that see the EU as either a peacepeace project after the Second World WarSecond World War, as a reaction to the HolocaustHolocaust or as an alternative to totalitariantotalitarian forms of government (both Stalinist and Nazi). I also identified a narrative that focuses on the memory of European integration as such and concentrates on the commemoration of speeches and treaties. There are three liberalliberal moral discourses that either focus on peace, tolerancetolerance and freedomfreedom that are associated with those cultural memory narratives.
