Tissue–Biomaterial Interactions

The tissue–material interface is very important for a proper implant performance because this is where the two systems interact and the suitability of the device as an implant is tested. When a medical device is implanted, this contact might lead to irritation, toxicity, or in long term contact, to cancer; while the same contact causes corrosion or degradation of the implant. In order to predict the reactions of the tissues and the implant against each other, the properties of a biomaterial surface (and bulk) are to be known.
