Relationship/Working Dogs: Detection Training

This chapter deals with the second expression of the relationship concept of the HCS, related to working dogs and more specifically how to train them in detection. In the beginning, a set of theoretical issues are presented regarding detection dog characteristics as well as detection steps, methods, and factors affecting detection training, but most importantly the major issue of the difference between tracing and trailing, the basic forms of detection dog training, and the most important knowledge for training efforts to succeed. The chapter continues presenting in a detailed and structured way the two forms of dog detection training. In tracking training, the methods, principles, and types of training are presented as well as the best-known tracking application, the training of hunting dogs including the basic issues concerning them, and a list of the best tracking breeds. In trailing training, emphasis is given on the issue of odor differentiation, the types and approaches of training (including “negative” training) and its most useful application, the training of drug search dogs, and their levels of training, which determine their effectiveness.
