Dog Training: Theoretical Issues

This chapter starts by presenting several theoretical issues related to dog training such as: the basic dog learning methods (Learning Based on the Pavlov’s Theory, Classical Conditioning; Learning from Results or Operant Conditioning; Non-Correlative Learning or Non-Associative; and Observational Learning), as well as the most used training methods (the Koehler Method; the Motivational Training; the Clicker Training; the Electric Collar Training; the Adversarial Training or Model Rival; the Enforcement Training; and the Training based on the Trainer, Dog-Owner and Dog Relationship). The second part of the chapter is introducing, examining, and substantiating the need for dog training that needs to follow the way HCS is considered by the society, which is the result of the way societal values are formulated and are considered as societal goals. As a result, following a substantive historical review, it is suggested that they have been developed and are still in use, utilizing the dog leaning and methods, mentioned previously, three training approaches: the traditional, the exciting, and the new one based on the HCS.
