The Renaissance Animal: Critics and Contexts

  • Teresa Grant

摘要

The chapter sets early modern apes on the stage in the context of ‘animal performance studies’, a burgeoning critical field represented by the work of Bruce Boehrer, Erica Fudge and Andreas Höfele amongst others. It explores how Shakespearean metatheatre addresses the use of animals, arguing that animal actors represent a significant additional metatheatrical resource.
