It’s Time for Some Me-Time: An Analysis of the Psychological Effects of a Six-Day-Period of Smartphone Separation
摘要
Research has revealed both risks and benefits associated with intensive smartphone usage behavior. Focusing on user wellbeing, this study investigates the psychological effects of interrupting constant smartphone accessibility as a coping strategy for phone-related negative outcomes. In an experimental study, smartphone owners (n = 31) were separated from their devices for a six-day period, while a control group (n = 28) retained access to their phones. Analyses showed that smartphone separation led to a more positive overall affect. Users exhibiting higher compulsive usage who were separated from their phones reported the most significant reduction in negative affect over time. Additionally, the Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) and self-esteem were found to be negatively correlated with changes in wellbeing. In conclusion, this study supports the idea that a ‘digital detox’ has the potential to positively influence wellbeing, although its specific impact varies based on individual user characteristics.
