A Big Data: Oriented Spatial Data Infrastructure for the Mexican National Laboratory for Earth Observation (LANOT)

The overall framework under which a Geographical Information System (GIS) operates together with a Geoportal is denominated a Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI). A key aspect for a successful operation is the correct combination of physical and logical tools that compose the subsystems of the SDI. We present the design of the Spatial Data Infrastructure for the National Laboratory for Earth Observation (LANOT) in Mexico, sponsored by the National Board for Science and Technology (CONACYT). The imagery acquisition station of LANOT is at the Geography Institute, UNAM; however, the Laboratory is made up of academic and governmental institutions in such a way that a wide range of professional backgrounds, skills, and perspectives (developers, researchers, users) are integrated. An asset of LANOT is the open distribution of the data under a Big Data scheme (MongoDB), which includes a large historical set of imagery as well as the set of near real time acquired imagery from three antennas in operation.
