Biologic Agents

  • Katherine France

摘要

Biologic agents are novel immunomodulatory medications targeted to control disease processes through modulation of inflammatory and immunologic pathways. They have expanded in number and scope over the course of the twenty-first century, growing to be one of the most employed and fastest growing types of medications today. Although biologic agents are employed across areas of medicine, their impact on dental treatment and their use in dental contexts remain poorly characterized, with only limited evidence to date. General considerations related to biologic agent use and monitoring, including careful evaluation for known risks of these agents, may apply to dental medicine and limited evidence available so far suggests safety in dental contexts. Patients tend to undergo careful pre-treatment testing and ongoing monitoring that may inform their suitability to receive dental treatment. Certain biologic agents have also shown promise in treatment of oral mucosal diseases. Further data will clarify any considerations needed for these patients during dental treatment including modifications to procedures or pre-treatment preparation.
