Postscript: Changing of the Guard

The chapters in this book have highlighted many men who have contributed to plankton ecology over the decades (and centuries). Now, it is important to highlight some of the early pioneering women in the field and to understand why there are comparatively fewer women. Progress is being made. Too many differences remain in all aspects of diversity. Many more perspectives, innovations, and ways of knowing are needed to co-create robust solutions that address complex water issues that affect everyone on Earth. They will write the next chapters on oceanography and phytoplankton ecology.
