Temperature and the Warming of Our Waters

Classic work on temperature relationships with phytoplankton growth was undertaken by Dick Eppley in the 1970s. Since that time, thermal relationships have been explored for many more species and functional groups. This chapter reviews phytoplankton-temperature relationships and implications for species composition and diversity in a future ocean. With temperatures rising, the impact of temperature with respect to species distributions, cellular metabolism, and carbon export is ever more important to consider.
