Cysts are a common patient concern in primary and dermatologic practices. They are slow-growing, usually benign, and may present as single or multiple cysts across the body. Though the mechanism of cyst causation is unclear, it may result from infection, trauma, or impaired auto-regulatory processes of the aging population. Associated symptoms such as redness, inflammation, and pain can be managed appropriately following a focused history and proper examination; treatment must be tailored to the location, cyst size, and based on whether or not the cyst is symptomatic. Skin changes are significant in older patients, including loss of elasticity, textural and pigmentary changes, as well as an increase in benign neoplasms, such as cysts. Cystic lesions may cause physical discomfort depending upon the location of the cyst and may also cause some psychological distress in the aging population. Management is tailored to treating symptomatic cysts and those with potential for complications.
