Aging, Health, and Disease
摘要
Aging is a universal phenomenon. Physiological or biological aging seldom matches chronological aging. Healthy aging is everyone’s goal and is targeted through implementation of several lifestyle measures, prevention of disease, and enabling the early diagnosis and treatment of illness. Disabilities from disease increase with aging and negatively impact function. Life expectancy has increased in males and females across the world, although it is highly variable in different regions of the world, and influenced by socio-economic factors. Blue zones are regions with exceptionally long living populations. Top causes of death are apparent but differ across the world, as also resultant disabilities. The increase in obesity with age is significant and associated with disease, disabilities, and mortality. Implementation of a healthy diet and regular physical activity is beneficial at all ages, including the old. Dermatological disease prevalence increases with age worldwide, necessitating availability of more dermatologists for adequate care. Among the new onset cancers in the United States, melanoma ranks sixth. Education and implementation of measures to minimize skin exposure to UV rays help in the prevention of skin cancer. A periodic comprehensive dermatological examination is recommended for all older adults.
