Integrating Technology into Interior Design Education: A Paradigm Shift in Teaching and Learning

Recently, the incorporation of technology into interior design curricula has become essential. Nevertheless, there is currently a knowledge gap regarding the most effective measures for infusing technology into interior design curricula. To bridge this gap, this study seeks to critically review recent literature and identify the best practices for technology integration in interior design programs. The study also evaluated the compatibility of Bahrain’s interior design program outputs with labor market standards through a survey with interior design graduates, interview with faculty members in the Interior Design Department at Ahlia University, and employees in the industry. The analysis showed that the interior design program outcomes were aligned with labor market requirements, but there was still room for improvement in some areas, such as practical experience and familiarity with current technologies. The study concludes that social media use, software tools, 3D printers, and a hybrid course delivery model are vital for effective technology integration. Additionally, faculty development, collaboration, internship supervisor feedback, and benchmarking are instrumental in ensuring technological integration. The findings of this study are crucial for institutions offering interior design programs, as they can assist in enhancing the quality of education and training for interior design students and guarantee that graduates are ready for the requirements of the job market. Overall, this study emphasizes the need for comprehensive research on best practices for technology integration into interior design curricula to prepare future interior designers for the industry’s technological demands.
