It is widely acknowledged that laminar boundary layer flow, also known as the Blasius solution, is generally unstable, even in the absence of pressure gradients. The unstable Tollmien-Schlichting (TS) modes were discovered a long time ago. However, the question remains: what causes the excitation of these unstable TS modes?
