Stimulation and Neuropsychological Rehabilitation of Memory

Neuropsychological stimulation and rehabilitation of memory are the subject of this chapter. The author describes that there are different theories and models that address memory and learning and that the brain has specific systems and structures involved in memory. She specifies that the memory system can be divided into subsystems, such as sensory, short-term, working, and long-term memory. It further highlights that it is necessary to consider memory difficulties related to learning in the context of intervention with children and adolescents. Rehabilitation models, such as Rourke’s Developmental Rehabilitation Model, help assess and treat learning disabilities. Specific interventions to promote memory improvements are suggested and exemplified, such as practice and rehearsal, mnemonic strategies, environmental support, and external devices. The choice of strategies and devices should consider individual needs and organic, personal, and situational factors.
