Smart Polishing with Shear Thickening Fluid
摘要
This chapter presents the state-of-the-art literature review for the applications of shear thickening fluids (STFs) in smart manufacturing as novel, self-adaptive materials. In particular, the three application streams are discussed: (i) flexible polishing using STF slurries; (ii) process optimization in machining with adaptive stiffness and damping by using STFs; and (iii) creating smart surfaces/structures treated with STFs. Further, the chapter reviews the recent advances in the modeling of STFs during the machining process. Special emphasis was paid to computational approaches, which have recently drawn significant attention. The simulation results, such as stress distribution and rheological flow, could provide valuable insights into the material removal behavior during shear thickening polishing (STP). In summary, this chapter provides a comprehensive review of recent progress in utilizing STFs for manufacturing applications. The chapter also highlights the significance of continuous research and development in shaping the future of STF-based machining technology.
