Responses to global disruptions, for example, the COVID-19 pandemic, rely on the application of mathematics and statistics. Both are also used to inform the public about a disruption, and to support the decision-making of authorities. The communication of such information via public forums brings with it the risk of spreading mis- or disinformation. Thus, for citizens to assess the veracity of claims, they must possess the capability to critically evaluate evidence. In this chapter, we present a literature survey and identified research gaps regarding the evaluation of media claims using mathematics and data. As a first step in addressing these gaps, we present the design of an Australian-German research project. This project aims to identify the modelling capabilities students require to use large data sets when evaluating mathematic-based claims in the media about sustainability issues.
