Ideological Factors in Goldblatt’s Translation of Sheng Si Pi Lao
摘要
This chapter examines Goldblatt’s translation of Sheng Si Pi Lao with regard to ideological manipulation. It is divided into three parts: (1) a description of the novel’s ideology-related aspects to lay a foundation for subsequent analysis; (2) an exploration of how Goldblatt rewrites the novel’s ideology-related aspects to produce a translation acceptable to the target audience; (3) an investigation into how ideological currents have shaped Goldblatt’s selection of translation themes and strategies, as well as his image projection from the original literature into the target literary system. Analyses reveal the ideological manipulation in the translation process in which rewriting in favour of the target ideology can be considered to best achieve acceptance and circulation of a translation in a receiving culture.
