Determination of the Dispersion of Carbon Monoxide, Sulphur Dioxide and Nitrogen Oxides from Selected Production Plants Along Thika Road and Mombasa Road in Nairobi County Kenya

Uncontrolled air pollution leads to climate change and contributes significantly to the health burden thus slowing down economic growth. In this paper, air-dispersion modelling has been studied as a viable technique to effectively predict the contribution of specific emission sources to the ambient air quality from two Production Plants (A and B) situated within an urban setting. The findings indicate the mean maximum 1-h concentration of CO was 41.87 mg/m3 and 0.00233 mg/m3, the 24-h concentration of SO2 was 5.45 μg/m3 and 65.22 μg/m3and 24-h maximum concentration of NOx was 31.38 μg/m3 and 10.93 μg/m3 for Production Plants A and B, respectively. In plant A, the mean maximum concentration of CO exceeded the limits set by both the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA Kenya) and the World Health Organization (WHO) and those of NOx exceeded limits set by WHO. The levels of CO and NOx emitted from plant B were within tolerable limits; however, the levels of SO2 exceeded the limits set by WHO.
